The Desert Mindset
Cacti are survivors. They evolved to thrive in the harshest conditions on earth β blazing sun, near-zero rainfall, rocky soil. The number one mistake most people make? Overwatering.
Think of a cactus as a camel: it stores water for the hard times. Your job is not to water it constantly β it's to give it the right conditions and let nature do the rest.
Follow this guide and your cactus will reward you with decades of beauty, and maybe even flowers.

The Six Pillars of Cactus Care
Master these and your cactus will thrive for years.
βοΈ
Sunlight
Most cacti need 4β6 hours of direct or bright indirect sunlight daily. South or west-facing windowsills are ideal in Indian homes. Rotate the pot every few weeks for even growth.
π‘ If your cactus starts leaning toward the window, it's asking for more light.
π§
Watering
Water deeply but infrequently. In summer: once every 7β10 days. In winter: once a month or less. Always let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Never leave standing water.
π‘ Stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it's still moist, wait longer.
πͺ΄
Soil & Potting
Use a well-draining cactus mix β never regular garden soil. A mix of coarse sand, perlite, and potting compost (1:1:1) works perfectly. Ensure your pot has drainage holes.
π‘ Terracotta pots are excellent as they allow soil to breathe and dry faster.
π‘οΈ
Temperature
Most cacti love warmth (20β35Β°C) and tolerate Indian summers well. Protect from temperatures below 5Β°C. Keep away from AC vents and cold draughts in winter months.
π‘ Desert nights are cold β a brief cool spell can actually trigger blooming!
π§ͺ
Fertilising
Feed lightly during the growing season (MarchβSeptember). Use a low-nitrogen, high-phosphorus fertiliser diluted to half strength. Feed once a month maximum. Never fertilise in winter.
π‘ Over-fertilising causes weak, leggy growth. Less is definitely more.
π
Repotting
Repot every 2β3 years, or when you see roots emerging from drainage holes. Spring is the best time. Use gloves and folded newspaper to handle spiny specimens safely.
π‘ After repotting, wait 1 week before watering to let any damaged roots heal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my cactus going soft and mushy?
βΌ
This is almost always root rot from overwatering. Remove the plant from its pot, cut away all black or mushy roots, let it dry for 3β5 days, then repot in fresh dry cactus mix. Water sparingly afterwards.
Why is my cactus growing tall and thin (etiolated)?
βΌ
It's reaching for light. This happens when a cactus doesn't get enough sunlight. Move it to a brighter location. The stretched part won't shrink back, but new growth will be healthy.
Can I keep my cactus indoors all year?
βΌ
Yes! Most cacti do beautifully indoors in bright windowsills. Just ensure they get at least 4 hours of bright light daily. A south or west-facing window is ideal in India.
How do I know when to water?
βΌ
The simplest test: stick your finger 2 cm into the soil. If it's dry all the way down, water deeply. If any moisture remains, wait. When in doubt, don't water β cacti survive drought better than waterlogging.
My cactus has white fluffy spots β what are they?
βΌ
Those are mealybugs, a common pest. Dab them with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol. For larger infestations, spray a diluted neem oil solution. Isolate the plant from others immediately.
Will my cactus ever flower?
βΌ
Yes β most cacti bloom given the right conditions! They need bright light, the right temperatures, and a cool, dry winter rest period. Many bloom only after a few years of growth. Patience is key!
